medium scale 3D initiation project (second year first semester)
(07/11/2023 - 17/12/2023)
What were the goals of the project?
I mainly wanted to challenge myself in creating as large a quantity of props as possible, while also not restraining their shapes to what I'd already known I was capable of achieving.
I set out to candidly design shapes and spaces that I did not know how to model right away, to then start figuring out how to better read the shapes and get used to transcribing them into 3D topology in my head.
This way of picturing objects allowed me to streamline my 3D asset production process a great deal for subsequent projects.
I also aimed to create two different "types" of props, each serving a very important and exclusive purpose.
The first type of prop were larger, more characterized props that would contribute to shaping and giving an identity to the space, but would ultimately be more complexe and take more work to produce.
The second type were smaller, reusable props that I could copy and paste many times within the scene, and that would furnish its shelves and boxes. These props were either single models or variants of a same model that I iterated upon minutely to not have their repetition seem unnatural.
process
I started by drawing plans for the room, and small sketches of each possible prop I might want to include. After selecting the props that seemed to me like the most fitting, impactful and economical to produce: I made 3D models of each of them, starting from the room itself.
Once that was done, I textured each of the models individually and started implementing them into Unity. There, I spent a long time figuring out how to arrange and resize them to occupy the space in a way I deemed satisfactory, as well as placing lights within the scene that would correspond to actual light sources, and make it pretty.
